Safety

Body Structure
REVA i has a steel space frame that cocoons the occupants in case of a collision. The car is provided with dent / scratch proof ABS body panels. Use of these materials enables small impacts to be absorbed without damage to the body panels which bounce back to their original shape. The large doors provided with side impact beams provide further safety to the passengers against side impacts.

Tested for side impact                3 tiered safety

The absence of an engine and other mechanical parts in the front, facilitate a large crush zone in case of a frontal collision; the impact thus doesn't get transferred to the driver. The special energy absorbing bumpers can withstand low impacts hence retaining their original shape.

The 2008 REVA i has a further extended safety package to enhance frontal and side impact protection.

Regulated by its weight and power output (400 kg without batteries and 15kW respectively), REVA i is essentially classified as a Quadricycle. Designed for low speed city mobility on congested roads, crash testing is not a part of the regulatory approval process. The REVA i however has been successfully, independently and voluntarily frontal-crash-tested for city speed driving conditions at 40 km/h by ARAI (The Automotive Research Association of India).

With over 42 million Km driven by customers globally and over 5500 years of ownership with no reported serious injuries, REVA possesses an exceptional safety record in over 13 countries.

Low centre of gravity
The positioning of the Power Pack position is such that the centre of gravity of the car remains low thus adding further stability and safety to the vehicle.

Adding more stability

Regenerative Braking
The REVA i employs both hydraulic and regenerative braking systems. The regenerative braking system works by reversing the direction of 'power flow' from the electric motor and using the 'surplus energy' in the car's movement to charge the batteries. This regenerative braking system operates in tandem with the 'conventional' mechanical braking system to enhance safety of the vehicle.

Warnings / Disables
Warning chimes are heard if the user has opened the door and left the key in the ignition and/or handbrake is not engaged.

REVA i will not move when on the neutral mode or when the system is plugged in for charging. It has a full-throttle-disable facility that prevents any run-off of the car, in case accelerator is pressed accidentally. Additionally, with a variety of temperature cut-offs, fuses, fans and detection devices, it meets the EU (quadricycle) requirements on EMC (Electro magnetic compatibility), which are the most stringent in the world.

Low voltage system
REVA i uses a low voltage system (48 Volts) that is very safe. REVA i has non-user serviceable battery compartment with single point battery watering facility.
