India's first Fuel cell prototype unveiled by President Shri Abdul Kalam
July 1, 2004, New Delhi

President Dr. Abdul Kalam, unveiled India's first fuel cell prototype car, which was been developed by REVA Electric Car Company (RECC), at the Technology Day Award ceremony at New Delhi. Hailed as the ''next great thing world over and the energy source for automobiles in the near future," this emerging technology, has the potential to significantly reduce energy use and harmful emissions, as well as dependence on oil.

We are happy to that we have gone a step forward by developing India's first prototype of a fuel cell powered car, a technology hitherto attempted only by a few auto giants worldwide. It is indeed a great moment for us to achieve this technological marvel in India. This will open up several avenues for further development of Electric Vehicles as one of the self-sustaining technologies of the future, which has the potential to lead the world in Electric Vehicles Technology as India has done in Information Technology (IT) and Biotechnology (BT) earlier. "

India is fortunate to have a space scientist and a visionary as its President when she is entering the golden threshold of economic upsurge, under whose guidance several technologies were developed in India. Fuel cell technology is a part of his vision 2020, which makes this a historic milestone for India.

Fuel cells are one of the most promising means of producing energy in the future. Although they are not expected to reach the mass market before 2010, fuel cell vehicles will someday revolutionize on-road transportation. Like battery electric vehicles, fuel cell vehicles are propelled by electric motors, by creating their own electricity through a chemical process using hydrogen fuel and oxygen from the air.

The fuel cell technology offers several advantages such as enhanced efficiencies of 40 to 45 percent compared to IC engines, zero emissions as the only exhaust in a fuel cell is water vapour, and enhanced reliability compared to conventional engines.

Various Departments in Government have been quite receptive to the pioneering efforts done by the company to commercialize Electric Vehicles in India and establish REVA as Global brand but have also been highly appreciative of the fact that company has taken lead in several new technologies in the field of Electric vehicles.
