Having given the concept and design to their American
Collaborator, Amerigon Inc of USA, the prototype was tested by the
Automatic Research Association of India in 1996 and certified for
roadworthiness.
Thereafter considerable R&D and extensive road
tests were done and consumer feedback inputs were considered for
the betterment of the project, During the last four years the company
has developed a strong vendor base and the company hopes to achieve
90 percent indigenasation in the first year.
Having developed this eco-friendly electric car,
REVA has done great for the country and its environment. In appreciation
of their efforts and concern for the environment the Rotary Club
of Madras East and Earthcare deem it a privilege to present this
Dr. M. S. Swaminathan Award for Environment Protection - 2001 to
REVA Electric Car Company. India is ready and well suited for introduction
of electric vehicles with the existing technologies available.
With depletion of all reserves and a world characterised
by smog, noise and all kinds of pollutants, governments are awakening
to the several benefits of EV technology. Electric vehicles have
vast potential in India.

Their advantages arise from the combination of
urban congestion, high pollution levels and large city car markets,
Air Pollution in India is worse than most other parts of the world
and vehicles alone contribute up to 70 percent of this problem in
the metro cities.
The recent directive of Supreme Court of India
to Delhi government to replace the city buses with CNG was a clear,
Indication of Importance attached to environment. The pronouncement
of highest judicial authority of the country is laudable and timely.
The company manufactures the REVA at Bommasandra
Industrial Area, Bangalore where production is based on an advanced
flexible assembly line that ensures high productivity at lower breakeven
volumes.
The facility has the capacity to produce 1,500
REVA cars this year with planned expansion capacity of 12,000 cars
a year by 2003.
