REVA Bags Award for Environment protection

REVA, India's first mass-produced electric car has received the Dr. M.S. Swaminathan award for environment protection for the year 2001.

According to an official release, the award presented each year by the Rotary club of Madras east, recognises proactive forces from all quarters of the society, who, in the present day, are nurturing ideals of a pollution free environment.

The decision on nominations is taken by a panel of advisors headed by Dr. D. Thyagarajan, secretary of Committee on Science and Technology for Developing countries.

The REVA electric car manufactured in Bangalore is targetted and designed primarily to suit customers of developing countries.

The indigenously developed vehicle with an operating cost of Rs 0.40 per km, is currently the most economical car on the road today, the release said.
